Make Your Own Dried Flowers

-by Editor

Prepare a place where you can hang flowers to dry. The place should be dry, and shielded from sunlight. Select a bunch of fresh flowers, with long, solid stems. Cut the flowers in the morning, when the dew has dried. Select some buds, and some flowers that have just opened out. Don't use fully opened flowers, as the petals may fall off during the drying process.

You could reinforce the stems by carefully inserting florist's wire through them. Make a hook at one end to secure it to the head of the flower. Then pass the other end of the wire from the head through the length of the stem. After you have done this with all the flowers, tie them together with a rubber band, and hang them upside down on a line or on nails or hooks.

If you don't have florist's wire, you could simply tie the flowers in bunches with rubber bands, and hang them to dry with the help of paper clips. Open out a paper clip, insert one end in the rubber band, and hang the other end around the line. Remember, the stems will shrink, so if you simply tie a string around them and hang them to dry, they may slip from the grasp of the string when they shrink.

Drying your own flowers makes for a fulfilling and fascinating hobby. They look wonderful in the home, and they also make for great gifts. You will need to experiment a little in order to find the flowers that dry best, depending upon the climate.
